The Many Flavors of Test-Optional College Admissions

testbrokenpencilAs we entered 2020, roughly one-third of the schools in our coverage universe offered some form of test-optional admissions. That figure cleared 70 percent in June and is now hovering at 90 percent with the holdouts largely in the South, particularly the public universities in Flordia and Georgia.

To help you keep up with the changes, we're actively tracking test-optional policies for several popular institutions we cover. As always, the definition of "test-optional" varies by institution and often has strings attached so pay close attention to the details.

Brown Eliminates SAT/ACT Essay Requirement

washpostBrown will no longer require the essay component to the SAT and ACT.  

This is one of several initiatives taken by the institution to expand access to low income families.

For applicants planning not to take the SAT/ACT essay, inclusion of a graded paper from a humanities or social science class is recommended.

June 6th SAT Scores to be Counted Despite Glitch

College board logoThe College Board announced earlier today that SAT scores from June 6th will be counted, despite a printing error that set 25 minute time limits on sections normally limited to 20 minutes.

After careful consideration, the College Board indicated that the two affected sections would not be scored, and that due to the design of the test, they would have no impact on the reliability of the results.

Bottom line: your SAT score will stand and you can expect to get the results on June 25th.

College Board Takes Steps Towards Equal Access and Opportunity

Actions Include Major Changes to SAT Format

downloadToday the College Board announced a series of actions designed to expand access and level the playing field for all aspiring college applicants.  These actions include:

  • A major redesign of the SAT format planned for Spring 2016
  • A partnership with Khan Academy to provide free test prep materials in support of the new test format
  • College application fee waivers for income-qualifying applicants

SAT changes include:

  • Three sections: Evidence-Based Reading and Writing, Math, and Essay
  • A return to the 1600 scale, with a separate score for the essay section
  • Elimination of point deductions for wrong answers
